India has one of the highest emissions of sulphur dioxide, carbon monoxide and particulate matter in the world. India’s cities often contain dangerously high levels of fine particulate matter, known as PM 2.5. How does Air pollution affect health?
Air pollution is caused by emissions from car engines, coal-fired power plants and even the vast paddy burning in neighbouring cities. In winters, a significant amount of pollutants also comes from biomass that people burn for their heating requirements. These pollutant particles can lead to respiratory problems like cough, sore throat, congestion, and breathlessness.
It also increases the risk of asthmatic attacks and various respiratory infections. Acute respiratory tract infections, asthma, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, and lung cancer are proven adverse respiratory effects of air pollution. Air pollution not only causes respiratory disorders but also impairs the immune system.
Air pollution and its effect of children’s health?
An alarming rise in air pollution alters the immune system in children. It makes them more susceptible to virus, bacteria and other disease-causing agents present in the polluted air. This leads to the majority of children constantly wheezing or suffering from throat and respiratory concerns leading to regular visits to the doctor for medications. Air pollution may also lead to skin concerns like acne etc. Minor exposure to polluted air can bring back the problems in a much more severe manner, leaving parents worried and children distressed.
